The Arithmetic of Carbon, the Poetry of Life

For decades, humanity has been engaged in one of the most ambitious scientific undertakings in history: measuring, modelling and reducing carbon emissions.

We have counted molecules with astonishing precision. We know the concentration of atmospheric CO₂ to remarkable accuracy. We estimate national emissions inventories, calculate carbon intensity per unit of gross domestic product, price carbon, trade carbon and offset carbon.

Yet we still struggle to answer a much simpler question:

Are people actually safer?

This question should unsettle us.

While atmospheric carbon has become one of the defining metrics of climate success, the lived experience of millions of people tells a far more complex story. Carbon accounting rarely tells us whether groundwater tables are recovering, whether rivers still flow through the dry season, or whether communities have secure access to drinking water.

A forest may generate millions of carbon credits while Indigenous communities lose customary access to ancestral lands. A country may reduce emissions while heatwaves kill thousands of children, women and elderly people. A corporation may proudly announce “net zero” while communities downstream contend with polluted rivers, failed harvests and collapsing livelihoods.

Carbon is, of course, essential. But carbon is not the only metric that matters in addressing the climate crisis.

Climate change was never fundamentally about parts per million of carbon dioxide. It was always about people, ecosystems and the conditions that make civilization possible.

Somewhere along the way, however, we confused the means with the end.

Carbon became not simply a critical indicator, but increasingly the central measure of success.

Governments compete over emissions trajectories. Investors scrutinise carbon disclosures. Companies publish glossy net-zero strategies. Conferences revolve around mitigation pathways. Success is often judged in tonnes of CO₂ equivalent avoided rather than by whether communities are healthier and safer, ecosystems are recovering, or multiple vulnerabilities are actually declining.

The result is a subtle but dangerous distortion:

We have optimised for what is measurable rather than what is meaningful.

Carbon does not feel pain. Carbon molecules do not experience loss. People do. Nature does.

When a Himalayan glacier disappears, the tragedy is not merely altered albedo or changes in the carbon cycle. It is also the disappearance of rivers that have sustained cultures and communities for centuries.

When coral reefs bleach, the consequences extend far beyond carbon budgets. Fisheries collapse. Tourism economies unravel. Coastal protection weakens. Cultural identities are threatened.

When extreme heat forces children out of school, when women must walk farther for water, when farmers abandon ancestral lands, or when families lose loved ones during floods, none of these experiences can be adequately described in tonnes of CO₂ equivalent.

Carbon does not capture grief.

It does not measure dignity.

It does not quantify cultural identity.

It does not record psychological trauma.

It cannot fully account for biodiversity’s intrinsic value.

Yet these are precisely the dimensions that help define whether climate action ultimately succeeds or fails.

Nature Is More Than a Carbon Warehouse

Perhaps nowhere is our carbon obsession more evident than in our treatment of nature.

Forests have become carbon stocks. Mangroves have become blue-carbon assets. Wetlands have become emissions sinks. Peatlands have become sequestration opportunities.

These descriptions may be scientifically useful, but they are profoundly incomplete.

A forest is not valuable simply because it stores carbon. It creates rainfall, supports biodiversity, regulates water, sustains Indigenous cultures, protects soils, enables pollination, nurtures medicinal knowledge and embodies centuries of ecological relationships that no carbon-accounting framework can fully capture.

When we reduce ecosystems primarily to their carbon content, we risk commodifying nature rather than understanding it.

We begin protecting forests because of what they do for carbon rather than because of what they are.

That distinction matters.

Climate negotiations increasingly recognise loss and damage, just transitions, gender equality, Indigenous knowledge and locally led adaptation. Yet carbon remains the dominant metric through which much climate action is evaluated.

Imagine assessing healthcare solely by hospital mortality rates while ignoring mental health, nutrition, disability, quality of life and access to care.

That would clearly be inadequate.

Yet climate policy sometimes makes an equivalent mistake.

A project may reduce emissions while increasing inequality. A renewable-energy transition may unintentionally marginalise local communities. Large-scale afforestation may displace pastoralists. Carbon markets may reward formal land ownership while overlooking traditional custodians.

The atmosphere may benefit while people do not.

What If We Measured Human Security?

What if climate success were judged more broadly?

Imagine if every major climate investment also had to answer questions such as:

How many lives became safer?
How much biodiversity was restored?
How much freshwater security improved?
How much cultural heritage was protected?
How much inequality declined?
How many women gained greater decision-making power?
How much community resilience increased?
How much dignity was preserved?
Are people experiencing less fear, insecurity and climate anxiety?

Carbon would remain indispensable.

But it would become one indicator among many rather than the supreme measure of success.

This is not an argument against reducing emissions. It is an argument against metric monoculture.

Complex and interconnected problems require multidimensional measurements.

Measuring What Actually Matters

What might the next generation of climate metrics look like?

The future of climate governance requires a profound evolution. We need indicators that capture planetary health alongside human wellbeing. We need metrics that integrate ecosystem integrity, biodiversity, equity, resilience, health and education outcomes, cultural continuity, social cohesion and intergenerational justice.

We could imagine a Climate Wellbeing Index or a Planetary Resilience Index.

Such indices would measure not merely whether carbon emissions declined, but whether societies became more resilient, ecosystems healthier, inequalities narrower and communities more capable of thriving under climatic stress.

In other words, they would measure what actually matters.

The economics would begin to change as well.

The carbon economy has created billions of dollars in markets, financial mechanisms and investment frameworks. But finance follows metrics.

If carbon remains the overwhelmingly dominant metric, money will continue flowing primarily toward carbon outcomes.

Imagine instead if investment decisions also rewarded improvements in ecosystem integrity, reductions in climate-induced displacement, restoration of Indigenous stewardship, improvements in child nutrition, reductions in heat-related mortality and enhanced community resilience.

Capital could begin solving multiple crises simultaneously rather than optimising for one variable.

That would represent genuine systems thinking.

From Carbon Management to Climate Restoration

This broader perspective becomes especially important as the climate conversation evolves from simply reducing future emissions toward restoring a safe and healthy climate.

Restoring the climate requires us to understand atmospheric carbon because excess greenhouse gases are part of the physical imbalance we must address. But restoring the climate cannot ultimately be reduced to achieving a particular number on a carbon ledger.

The purpose is larger.

It is to restore and protect the conditions in which people, ecosystems and future generations can flourish.

Carbon is therefore essential—but it remains a means toward that larger end.

Ultimately, this debate is not only scientific. It is also ethical.

Future generations are unlikely to ask whether we achieved a particular emissions trajectory by a particular year.

They may instead ask:

Did we protect life?

Did we restore nature?

Did we reduce suffering?

Did we leave the world more resilient, more just and more capable of sustaining life than we found it?

Carbon contributes to answering those questions, but carbon is not the answer itself.

The climate movement does not need less science. It needs broader science.

It does not need to abandon carbon. It needs to place carbon back where it belongs: as an essential measure and means rather than the ultimate end.

Climate action should never become an accounting exercise in which tonnes of avoided or removed emissions eclipse the wellbeing of people or the integrity of nature.

The real currency of climate action is not carbon.

It is life.

Perhaps the defining challenge of the next decade is therefore not merely decarbonising our economies. It is also re-humanising climate policy and re-centring nature as a living system rather than viewing it primarily as a carbon reservoir.

Because, in the end, humanity was never trying to save carbon.

We were trying to preserve—and increasingly, to restore—the conditions that allow life, in all its diversity, dignity and beauty, to flourish.

If our metrics cannot capture that, perhaps it is not the planet that needs a new climate strategy.

Perhaps it is us!
