Our vision is humanity flourishing for millennia to come. Our mission is to create the global alignment that ushers in a new era for humanity, paving the way with Climate Restoration. We believe this is one of the defining responsibilities of our time: not only to reduce harm, but to restore the conditions that make long-term flourishing possible. A new era begins when humanity stands together to restore a safe, pre-industrial climate for future generations.
Climate Action Is Missing a Third Leg
Most climate action today stands on two pillars: mitigation and adaptation. Mitigation reduces new emissions. Adaptation helps societies cope with the impacts already underway. Both are essential, but neither removes the excess carbon already heating up the planet. Net zero is a necessary milestone, but insufficient on its own. That is why climate action needs a third leg: restoration. Climate Restoration means removing the excess CO2 from the atmosphere, restoring our natural life-supporting ecosystems, and returning to the historically safe level of below 300 ppm.
Mitigation slows the damage. Adaptation helps us endure it. Climate Restoration helps repair it.
The Bigger Problem We’re Facing
In order to restore the climate, we must confront a deeper challenge: humanity does not yet know how to organize itself at the scale this moment requires. We already have extraordinary resources, breakthrough solutions, and growing motivation to act. Yet what is still missing is the level of alignment needed to turn these assets into coordinated global action.
As the saying often attributed to Einstein goes, we cannot solve a problem with the same thinking that created it. The deeper crisis is therefore not only ecological. It is civilizational. We are a species with immense intelligence, but insufficient alignment. We have capital, science, technology, institutions, and public concern, yet they remain fragmented across silos, incentives, and short time horizons.
Climate Restoration cannot be achieved by isolated actors working separately. Science without funding will stall. Funding without viable pathways will fail. Local projects without coordination will remain too small. This work requires an ecosystem aligned around a common mission. The challenge is not only to generate solutions, but to connect the pieces required to make them real and scale them up—quickly.
A 25-Year Mission to Restore the Climate by 2050
On January 22, 2026, we announced a 25-year mission to restore the climate by 2050. This was not a symbolic statement. It was a call to unite humanity around one of the greatest and most meaningful missions of our time: restoring a safe, pre-industrial climate for future generations.
A mission of this scale requires more than concern. It requires building enough global capacity across all viable pathways to operate at full scale. To restore the climate, humanity must ultimately reach around 60 gigatons of CO2 removal per year: roughly 10 gigatons to offset the emissions likely to remain, and roughly 50 gigatons per year to remove the excess trillion tons of CO2 already accumulated in the atmosphere. The math is straightforward: 50 gigatons per year for 20 years equals 1,000 gigatons, or one trillion tons. It is an ambitious goal—but it is within humanity’s reach, if we commit to it and take action at the scale it demands.
How We Scale Climate Restoration by 2030
Our plan is to scale the Climate Restoration industry by 2030 through three reinforcing engines. First, we need a global movement: millions of people calling for Climate Restoration and taking action together. Second, we need Climate Restoration pathways that are credible, measurable, affordable, and scalable. We call them gigaton-scale Climate Restoration pathways. Third, we need the funding and implementation capacity required to move from promising pilots to real-world deployment at scale.

Building a Global Movement
Building a global movement means building a transnational citizen campaign taking action to restore the climate by 2050. Our near-term goals are to engage 1 million people, have 100 organizations adopt the mission, and launch 100 ambassadors spanning about 25 countries, major religions, major Indigenous tribes, major industries, and select groups such as women, young people, and teachers. By 2030, this grows to 1 billion people engaged, 10,000 organizations, and 10,000 ambassadors with global coverage.
We plan to build this movement through three primary campaigns—the Ambassadors Program, Social Media Campaign, and Grassroots Campaign—while working alongside aligned initiatives led by partner organizations. One of the first is the Rotary Climate Restoration Initiative, a Rotary-led effort designed to help clubs and districts move from awareness to endorsement, individual commitment, ambassador leadership, and practical local action—creating a scalable pathway through which Rotary can help restore the climate.
Advancing and Validating Climate Restoration Pathways
Advancing and validating Climate Restoration pathways means scaling a portfolio of gigaton-scale Climate Restoration pathways—not betting the future on a single approach. We need multiple pathways, each with different strengths, geographies, timelines, co-benefits, and scaling dynamics. Together, they form a diversified portfolio capable of contributing to Climate Restoration at a meaningful scale.
These pathways span land, ocean, and food systems. Microalgae-based marine CDR includes approaches such as biomimetic ocean fertilization, which mimics natural nutrient-cycling effects created by whales, volcanoes, and dust storms. These methods can work with the ocean’s biological systems to increase carbon drawdown at a very large scale.
Macroalgae, including seaweed, can grow quickly, remove carbon, help restore marine ecosystems, and support value chains such as food, feed, and fertilizer. Bamboo can rapidly generate biomass while restoring degraded land, supporting livelihoods, and creating durable climate and economic value.
Ecosystem restoration helps recover forests, wetlands, mangroves, and other life-supporting ecosystems that regulate climate, temperature, water, and biodiversity. Regenerative agriculture can rebuild soil carbon, improve water retention, increase resilience, and strengthen food systems. Additional pathways are also being explored.
The goal is collective scale. If we validate and scale all viable gigaton-scale pathways together, they can help reach the roughly 60 gigatons of CO2 removal per year the world ultimately needs—with redundancy built in. That redundancy matters. It reduces dependence on any single pathway and makes Climate Restoration more resilient, more credible, and more achievable.
Funding and Scaling Implementation
Funding and scaling implementation is the third engine of the Climate Restoration ecosystem. Its role is to connect capital to execution while reducing operational friction to a minimum—so that promising pathways, pilots, and local platforms can grow into real projects, real companies, and global climate impact. Climate Restoration will not scale on passion alone. It needs financial structures designed to move solutions from early development to large-scale deployment.
On the philanthropic side, the Grandparents Fund for Climate Restoration (GFCR) helps mobilize mission-aligned funding for the work that must happen before markets can fully carry it: research, validation, coordination, movement-building, pilots, and early implementation. On the investment side, the Climate Restoration Venture Studio (CRVS) helps accelerate projects and companies that can attract capital, build execution capacity, and scale viable pathways into the real world. Together, these two tracks help turn Climate Restoration from a promising field into an operating industry.
Join the Mission to Restore the Climate for Future Generations
Our immediate focus is clear: scale the three engines and, through them, scale the Climate Restoration industry by 2030. We need to build a global movement large enough to create public will and aligned action. We need to advance, validate and scale sufficient gigaton-scale Climate Restoration pathways to create real removal capacity. And we need to mobilize the funding and implementation systems that can move those pathways into widespread deployment.
This is the work of the next few years. When we succeed, Climate Restoration will enter the next decade as a serious global capability rather than a promising but fragmented field. That is why this moment matters. We are not waiting for the future to arrive. We are helping build it now—and we need more people, organizations, donors, ambassadors, and partners to help make it real.
