A New Chapter for LOF: GFCR, CRA and Eddy Carbon Research
Date: June 23, 2026 || For Immediate Release
The Grandparents Fund for Climate Restoration (GFCR), the Climate Restoration Alliance (CRA) and Eddy Carbon Research are pleased to announce a new chapter in the development of Localized Ocean Fertilization (LOF).
What LOF Is
Localized Ocean Fertilization (LOF) is a climate restoration approach designed to stimulate natural ocean processes that can increase carbon drawdown and, at full scale, contribute to gigaton-scale CO2 removal. It is one of CRA’s Climate Restoration Pathways, alongside seaweed and ocean biomass sinking, ecosystem restoration, bamboo cultivation, and regenerative agriculture, with additional pathways continuing to emerge.
From Incubation to Dedicated Home
LOF was incubated within CRA with support from the Grandparents Fund for Climate Restoration (GFCR), as part of our shared commitment to accelerate practical, science-based pathways for climate restoration.Â
That incubation has been successful not only in clarifying the vision and attracting funding and collaboration, but also in advancing tangible work on the ground and in the field — including the buoy project, ongoing satellite & data analysis work, the development of scientific white papers, the Cooley Landing Test, and development of the roadmap to scale LOF by 2030.Â
Together, these efforts helped bring LOF to a stage where it is ready for its next organizational chapter.
A New Chapter
As a result, the LOF effort is now being spun off into Eddy Carbon Research, a nonprofit being established, led by Peter Fiekowsky and working in collaboration with CRA and GFCR.
This is not a separation of mission, but an expansion of capacity. CRA remains committed to building the broader climate restoration movement and ecosystem, while Eddy Carbon Research can now concentrate more deeply on the research, development, and advancement of LOF.
This is what successful incubation can make possible: helping promising work mature and then supporting it in taking its next step with greater focus, leadership, and momentum.
How This Fits Together
If you are passionate about implementing LOF, we invite you to connect with Eddy Carbon Research. If you are passionate about building the Climate Restoration Industry and the broader ecosystem that can support multiple pathways and bring millions of people into the movement, we invite you to engage through CRA.
We also want to thank CRA’s LOF team, launched late last year, and the people who helped bring LOF to this point: Bob Fisher, Linda VerNooy, Dr. Sukla Das, Dr. Matthew Savoca, Prof. Paul Henry Beckwith, Ray Sundby, Ron Matteson, Kirk Laughton, Kevin Shanley, and Tim Chamberlain. As part of this next chapter, members of CRA’s LOF team will join the Eddy Carbon Research team, helping carry this work forward with greater focus and continuity.Â
Most importantly, this is not a division of people or purpose. We remain one movement, united by a shared mission to restore a safe climate for future generations, even as different parts of that movement take on more focused roles.
Join Us on June 25
We invite our community, partners, supporters, and fellow climate leaders to join us in two days for the June 25 community update, where we will share this announcement directly and speak more about what this next chapter makes possible.

With Gratitude and Optimism
Together, we are entering this new phase with gratitude, confidence, and renewed inspiration. The climate challenge is enormous, but so is the opportunity before us: to develop real pathways that can help restore a safe climate for future generations.
With appreciation and optimism,
Peter Fiekowsky
